Should You Buy Multiple Domains? Redirects, Typos and Brand Protection

When owning extra domains makes sense, how to redirect them properly, and how to protect your brand without wasting money.

Once you have your main domain, you might wonder whether to buy other versions: different extensions, misspellings, or keyword domains for specific services. Sometimes that's smart brand protection, and sometimes it's money wasted. Here's how to decide.

Good reasons to own extra domains

Protect your brand

Owning the main extensions of your brand name, such as .com and your local extension, prevents others from using them to confuse your customers.

Catch common typos

If your name is often misspelled, owning the most common misspelling and redirecting it to your main site keeps those visitors from getting lost.

Support marketing campaigns

A short, memorable domain for a campaign, event or product launch can be easier to use in ads, radio and print. It can redirect to the right page on your main site.

Serve local markets

Businesses in several countries may use country extensions for local sites. See our guide to country domains.

Target a specific service or city

A local business might own a city + service domain for ads while keeping its brand name as the main site. Read why local businesses need a city + service domain.

When extra domains aren't worth it

  • Buying dozens of unusual extensions nobody will type
  • Creating many thin websites with copied content, which can hurt your SEO
  • Holding names you'll never use, without a clear protection reason

How to use extra domains correctly

Use 301 redirects

The cleanest approach is a permanent 301 redirect from each extra domain to your main site or to the matching page. This passes visitors along smoothly and tells search engines which site is the main one.

Don't duplicate your website

Running the same content on several domains can confuse search engines and split your signals. Choose one main domain and redirect the rest.

Use separate sites only with unique content

If you do run separate websites, for example in different countries, give each one unique, useful content in the right language.

A simple rule: one brand, one main website. Every other domain should either redirect to it or have a clear, unique purpose of its own.

A practical starter set

For most small businesses, a sensible set is:

  1. Your main .com
  2. Your local country extension, if you have one
  3. One or two common misspellings, if your name is often mistyped

That's it. Add campaign or service domains only when you have a clear plan to use them.

Keep them organized

Keep all your domains in one registrar account with two-factor authentication and auto-renew turned on. Keep a simple list of what each domain does and where it redirects.
