Choosing a Domain for Your AI or SaaS Product

How to name an AI tool or SaaS product: descriptive vs. brandable names, the .ai question, and what makes a tech domain credible.

Industry Guides3 min readOctober 17, 2026

The software market is crowded, and the AI wave has made it even more so. Your domain needs to sound credible, be easy to remember and work as your product name in an app store, on a pricing page and in a sales demo. Here's how to choose one.

Descriptive or brandable?

Descriptive names

Names that describe what the product does, like DiagramGenerator.com or DataRecoveryLaboratory.com, are instantly clear. They work well for focused tools, landing pages and products that win customers through search.

Brandable names

Invented or abstract names, like SolaClient.com or Eveloom.com, give you room to grow into a platform with many features. They're also easier to trademark.

Many SaaS companies combine both: a brandable company name and descriptive pages or product names on the website.

The .ai question

The .ai extension has become very popular with AI companies. It's short and signals your focus immediately. But keep in mind:

  • .ai names are often more expensive to register and renew than .com
  • Your business may evolve beyond AI as the technology becomes standard
  • Some customers will still type .com by habit

If you choose .ai, try to secure or at least monitor the matching .com. Many companies add "ai" inside a .com instead, such as MindMateAI.com, which keeps the trusted extension while signaling the technology.

What makes a tech domain credible

  • Short and pronounceable. Teams say your name in meetings and demos.
  • No odd spellings. Dropped vowels were trendy, but they create confusion.
  • Fits the buyer. Enterprise software benefits from a solid, serious name; consumer apps can be more playful.
  • Works globally. Check that the name doesn't have an unfortunate meaning in your key markets.
Picture the name in three places: on your login screen, in an invoice to a customer, and in a news headline. If it works in all three, it's a strong candidate.

SEO considerations for SaaS

Your domain won't decide your rankings, but a clear name can help your search results and ads look more relevant. What matters most is helpful content, a fast product site and strong links. Read how your domain affects SEO.

Practical checklist

  1. Shortlist names that match your product vision, not just your first feature.
  2. Check trademarks in software categories.
  3. Check app store and social handle availability.
  4. Secure the .com, or plan how you'll handle it if you use another extension.
  5. Set up professional email on the domain from day one. See why a custom domain email builds trust.
